Behind the Paintings

There’s something about being in the water that evokes my creativity. In my art, I aim to capture the seas ability to be both calming and powerful, something we are always reminded of when spending time in the sea. I am fortunate to have been born and raised in Cornwall, my love for the keltic coast is in my blood, and I am forever grateful to call it home. Through painting and surfing I have found freedom, peace and purpose. My aim is to encapsulate the feeling you get when being in or by the sea, and put it onto canvas. The meditative process of painting has helped me in more ways than one, as soon as my paintbrush touches the canvas i’m lost in my own world. I can paint for hours which feel like minutes and allow my thoughts and feelings to flow through the brush, it’s very mindful.

I tend to work off of reference photos that I have captured when exploring or while photographing surfers. My favourite part of the process is adding in the fine details and highlights, which make the paintings come to life. I try to capture every tiny element in each painting to make them as detailed and lifelike as I can. I tend to work in oils as I love the flexibility of the product, its drawn out drying time gives me a while to manipulate the painting, and its blend ability allows a smooth transition between colours, to create the gradients that make up the beautiful hues of the sea.

I am so grateful for my life here, and sharing art inspired by the Cornish coast feels like a great way to celebrate its beauty, I aim to bring the grounding vibration of the sea into many peoples homes. Creating artwork of the coves and beaches that so many travel far to see, feels like i’m helping share the raw beauty of the this unique beautiful coastline.
